The onsite National Bar was another key fixture, opening in the early 1860s. In addition to providing upscale accommodations for travelers, many of whom arrived at the stagecoach stop mere steps away, the hotel housed the town's first telegraph office, and at one point the post office. The town developed around Deer Creek, and in 1856, the National Exchange Hotel opened-it has been a central gathering spot in Nevada City ever since. Nevada City became a hotbed of activity in the 1850s after the first prospector found gold along Deer Creek in 1849.
